Some Furniture Buying Tips

Below are a few suggestions when looking for a new piece of furniture…
- Check inside the drawers to check the quality of the craftsmanship, if you find staples or perhaps masonite it may not be great piece.
- Look underneath to see how a piece is assembled.
- Always carry a small measuring tape.
- Measure where you want the piece to go, measure the width of your doorways and hallways, sometimes it’s hard to judge the scale of a piece when shopping in a large showroom.
- It’s always good to do research, and to know and be able to identify different woods, historical styles and designers/manufacturers. The design section in the reference library or any library is a good place to start.
- Shop locally, there’s lot of great canadian made goods out there. (see gallery)
- Some surface finishes show scratches more clearly especially darker coloured pieces.
- Buy coasters as well.
- If you want something that’s worry free, sometimes a more rustic piece is a better fit especially with kids. Nicks and scratches can add character to a piece and you don’t what to be getting stressed-out over a table.
- You get what you pay for, and don’t judge things by the sticker price either, trite I know.
