Ye Olde Rocking Chair Repair

Finishing up a few repairs to this rocking chair. The bottom part was broken in a few places and missing a rail. I had no choice but to turn an oak replacement on the lathe. It was a good excuse to try some wood turning and after receiving some pointers from a neighboring woodworker, I got started.

Basically a lathe rotates a block of wood and material is removed using chisels and gouges as shown below.

I eyeballed the approximate shape and took measurements as I took off material and it turned out pretty decently.

The new piece after it was fitted in the centre of the base.

The base was then glued and clamped to the seat… and it’s back in action.
